# What is a Smartdoc?

A Smartdoc is a legally binding document such as a contract, NDA, or intake form that your clients can fill out and e-sign.

A Smartdoc is a legally binding document such as a contract, NDA, or intake form that your clients can fill out and e-sign directly from their email or client portal.

Smartdocs work by layering fillable fields onto a document you've already created. You bring your own document and then drop fields like signatures, names, and dates onto it.

# Smartdocs vs. contracts in proposals

Both tools let you collect signatures, but they serve different purposes:
